It seems like every time I write about The Subjects, every time we run into another person who knows the boys from Brooklyn, the conversation and the words get epically descriptive. It becomes something of a telling or a pageant of exploits that everyone marvels upon and vicariously lives through. It's an endless collection of stories that are larger than life and too good to be true. They often involve lethal amounts of alcohol, nights that never end and can involve older women.

The stories are hyperventilated, blurted out with great excitement because Cobra, Pickles, Joe and Dave do not live out a normal life and the even crazier part of it all is that they find a way to even go beyond the depraved and out-of-control activities that normally occur on the road for touring musicians in a constant state of boozy insomnia. They drink ALL night. They live for it. They really do. They live for gathering all of the inane and hard-to-believe stories that they somehow stir out of these cities that are far from home. They get into confrontations. They get emotional. And they have raging parties in their hotel rooms (when they have those, which is a rare night) with menopausal flight attendants. They groggily wake up the following morning after all of this - not to mention a 45-minute gig somewhere in there, where they went onto a stage and generally thrilled everyone in the room with their bouncy, smart pop that feels like summery temperatures and the time of a party - and they do it all again, starting early to get back to the deep buzz that faded out when they passed out or eased heads down to pillows or the hard wood.

Everyone who's ever met the four men in The Subjects has stories, all of which are swollen with unbelievable twists and turns, but there's nothing far-fetched about the band's impeccable, if loose and tumble, songs. It's as if all of these efforts made to get into as much playful trouble and to bait out the very last bit of abandon that any of the group might have talking to them, telling them this isn't such a keen idea, are done so that there can be some intelligent reflection about it when things get a little calmer, when they get home and the diversions are less intensified. David Sheinkopf and Matty Pickles are singers with idiosyncratic voices that fluctuate in interesting places and tell these stories of extra level love woes and of late 20s growing pains. So many of the songs that The Subjects write are mediations on what's before them and what's the best way that it can all turn out, if that's even an option.

The songs featured in this session - three of which are crisp and new since the recent release of the group's new EP "New Soft Shoe" - are miniature bumps and bruises that involve missed signals and miscommunication. As Pickles sings during a slowed down bridge on "The Hard Way," one of the band's best songs to date, "I'm jealous/She's angry/We both know that's changing," we hear a person (or two people) recognizing that their actions do affect others and the gravity of such heavy thoughts is paramount in so many Subjects songs. People are hurt and people are redeemed after the hurt. Wild nights ring for days and weeks and yet, the good souls at the ends of these songs find their ways to those redemptive spots, turning horseplay and gallivanting into wisdom - wisdom with jangling guitar tones and a backbeat that will start any night off and running again.

-- A solo project from Chicago's Even Weiss (currently of Damiera, formerly of The Progress, Up Up Down Down) where he wrote and recorded one new song every week for exactly one year. It's an involved listen - simply because of the sheer number of tracks - but it flies by, overflowing with terrifically catchy and deeply personal indie rock songs along the lines of Braid or Death Cab For Cutie. East London group Dark Captain Light Captain spawned a surprise hit in the US with their release of their full-length debut, Miracle Kicker, in fall of last year. The album received loads of glowing reviews and a place in some surprising end-of-year charts. There’s a line on “Mungo Jerry,” from Roy Jay’s new album, Lucky Guy, that sums up the life and music of this successful entrepreneur turned musician: “I’m living the life that I wanted to live/When I need a hand, folks are happy to give.” Indeed, Roy Jay is now living the life he’s wanted to live, making the music he wants to make, and sharing it with the world. Lucky Guy is the album Roy Jay waited 20 years to make, and it is his artistic vision, fully formed – heartfelt, incisive and soulful.

Jay’s music is an amalgam of his influences; a touch of Dylan, a dash of Paul Simon, a heaping of Jimmy Buffet and infused with the wide-open, American spirit of the Grateful Dead. And it is the reflection of a man who has journeyed to be where he wanted to be all along.

Growing up, Jay was a music fanatic. “I started off with Jim Croce and the Beatles. ‘Bad, Bad Leroy Brown’ was the first single I ever bought,” he recollects with a smile. Jay played in several bands while in college (“I was pretty good,” he says.), influenced by the seminal hard rock of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin.

But the demands of real life intruded, and for 20 years, Roy Jay put his guitar down to become a successful entrepreneur. “For 10 years,” he says, “all I did was work.” He continues, “I never stopped loving music, and even though I was focused on work, music was always in my heart.”

Finally, Jay had enough. As he recounts, “I always saw a lot of live music. One night last year, I came home from a show and I just ordered a guitar. The desire to participate in music became overwhelming. I enrolled in the Berklee College of Music’s online program and started playing 6 days a week, which I continue to do.”

Jay soon began writing feverishly, and he was enthused enough with the results to begin to seriously consider recording. Lyricists Marsha Garcia and Jeff Zampino provided Jay with words which are striking for their sophistication, emotional power and depth.

But the project really took off when Jay encountered producer Chris Seefried, a music veteran who has worked with artists as varied as Quincy Jones and Roseanne Cash. “When I first met Chris,” Jay says, “I just wanted to record something so I could get gigs. I had no idea I was going to make what turned out to be when I sat down with him.”

At first, Jay leaned on Chris heavily. “The first five songs we recorded, Chris wrote most of the music for. But we took a break, and then we wrote a bunch of new music together like ‘California Grey.’ When we recorded those, I knew something was going on. We began using different rhythmic motifs – and at that point it became uniquely me, and it stayed that way for the rest of the recording.”

Indeed, at 8 minutes long, “California Grey” is an audacious and enveloping tale of a man taking on new adventures, creating a wide-open future. With a B-3 humming in the background, the drums loping, and the guitars weaving reassuring rhythm and lead lines, Jay sings out his story.
“Mungo Jerry” another favorite of Jay’s, has a laconic and laid back groove that is the perfect backdrop for a tale of men who escape the hurriedness of the working world to reinvent their life, so as to “take it slow.” The music is accomplished, but never forced – as the closing solo soars, it feels as natural as watching a sunset on the horizon.

Jay calls some of the songs “escapist,” but it’s a misleading characterization. What the songs are about is a return to the most authentic parts of oneself, of things that were thought to have been left behind and of finding peace in the slow lane. Whether it’s “Time’s Page” or “Lucky Guy,” Garcia and Zampino’s words, and Jay’s music, give us characters, music and images that impress by making the complex simple and effortless.

Roy Jay’s music is made for a simple reason – the love of creating it. It has been a long road to get here, but he is now firmly on it, and walking easy. “I don’t do this for money,” he says simply. “It’s just about making as much good music as possible, continually learning and growing as a musician, and following this path, wherever it leads.” On Lucky Guy, Jay takes the listener inside of the creative mind of a musician who is now on a journey that expresses the most authentic elements of his being.

As far as days around here go, today has been pretty rockist. That will change tomorrow and Friday, but for now we are surrounded by guitar bands, trying hard not to call it early and go shotgun beers. This tune from Midnight Masses (a new project from Brooklyn musician Autry Fulbright and a ton of other people in bands like Here We Go Magic, Trail Of Dead, and TV On The Radio) is the crest of that listening wave–a song that took the only thing we ever liked about The Doors (their creepiness) and dressed it up nice in crystalline guitar pours and Masonic Temple-sized reverb. It's from their debut EP, Rapture Ready, I Gazed At The Body, produced by TVOTR's Gerry "Ghosthouse" Smith (their credit) and David Tolmei and out November 10th through Collect Records.

Matt Lowell’s combination of soulful rock sounds set his new EP apart from the new generation of attention grabbing musicians. Matt is set to release this “Second Storm EP” this fall. Second Storm was co-written and produced by Lowell and Crit Harmon, winner of 2008 Boston Music Awards producer of the year.

After graduating Berklee College of Music, Matt toured in support of his first EP in 2008 at popular venues such as BB Kings, Blender Theatre, Highline Ballroom and Irving Plaza opening for well known acts as Eve6, Jeffrey Gaines, Martin Sexton, Marcy Playground, Val Emmich, Will Dailey, and others. This touring led to a live performance on Fox TV Boston where Matt received raved reviews for his performance of a new song “Kicking Around”.

Early last week, a photograph on the front page of the New York Times showed the skyline of Los Angeles, California, from slightly above, on level with the tops of the highest buildings. Just behind those buildings, up on the surrounding mountains raged those scary and damaging wildfires that seem to find extra lives, like Mario or Luigi cracking bricks with their heads find them, continuing to tick and rampage across the dry grounds and forested areas, taking hundreds of homes and firefighters with its deadly stroll.

The fires in the photo were eye-popping and terrifying in their height and in their glare. They had nothing but hot evil on their minds and it appeared that everyone was in danger of being smoked and burnt completely out of the picture, sent screaming and running into the ocean, with their knuckle hair and eyebrows singed off. The Brooklyn band Hopewell, pulls off a stirring accompaniment to those wildfires, which have become such a summer and autumn tradition in California and Arizona. It's music for the viewing of such magnificent tragedies that are so easily set into motion, ignited into realism, yet are tamed or curtailed so impossibly.

The roaring and chiming guitars and the pulsing vocals of Jason Russo, provides such burning bolts of continuous smoldering - as the heat builds, wanes, ashes and then tokes back up into its most heartened form before eventually coming into contact with a foil. Hopewell, hand-picked by Wayne Coyne and the rest of the pride of Oklahoma City - the Flaming Lips - to play in their personally curated All Tomorrow's Parties showcase this weekend in Monticello, New York, is mindful of this overwhelming feeling of displacement of self and the way that its actions are seldom not perpetrated by powers outside of one's own control. It's as if wildfires and ground tremors, or surprise wind storms that knock the power out and shift homes upon their foundations, are drawing themselves more elusive bodies and working outside of their normal strictures.

They've costume-changed themselves into affectations that can alter moods and the people they belong to - into heightened positions of drama and fear - bringing these end of time scenarios that feel disciplinary, but still manage to get the blood racing and the sweat popping out of the pores in a way that isn't all that displeasing. The songs on "Good Good Desperation," the band's latest on Tee Pee Records are rife with moments that make you feel as if you are in touch with the camera's lens in that photograph of the burning trees in the mountains of California, zeroing in on civilization for a stand-off, taking it all in and only feeling slightly afraid of what's next, mostly just sitting there in awe of the brute force. It might be that good, good desperation that would make a plundering or a praising seem like one and the same, as if conventions and odds, gentility and fussiness have just been shot down and there's no need to get too over-alarmed by what's to come next. It may be a good show - or as good as you're gonna see before the fires find your house for a final gobbling and goodbye to you.

Toronto electro-duo Woodhands is back! The band has started into a set of tour dates in the US armed with a new remix of Peter Bjorn & John's song "Nothing." They are also looking forward to performing at this year's Monolith Festival at Red Rocks. Woodhands is currently working on the followup to their celebrated debut from last spring, Heart Attack. The album will be called Remorsecapade and is due out on Paper Bag Records later this year.

In celebration of their return to the US, the band are offering up this remix for mp3 download. Daniel Werb from Woodhands talks about the remix a bit, "...remixing Peter, Bjorn and John was a thrill for us and we wanted to make sure that we didn't just try to ape what they were doing. The vocal lines are so strong that it was easy to build a dance track around them, and the acoustic piano in the back end was our way of bringing out the sadness in the voice while still keeping the track bouncing. And somehow, even though we sped everything up, our version comes out twice as long. Dance music: go figure."
